The Senior Trade Counsel will manage all aspects of global trade compliance while advising the company on legal and policy matters related to international trade, sanctions, tariffs, and import/export regulations in the countries where Polaris does business which include UK, Europe, Russia, China, Japan, Australia, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, US, and others. Identifies and manages risks to the business while serving as trusted advisor when counseling management. Leads a global matrixed and direct reporting trade compliance organization distributed across Europe, North America, and India. The ideal candidate can identify and drive organizational and cultural changes needed to adapt strategically to changing market demands, supply chain imperatives, technological transformation, and internal product innovation and sourcing initiatives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Provide thought leadership and guidance to the business units, executive leaders and C-Suite on import/export regulations and sanctions as needed, including without limitation HTS classification, free trade agreements, USMCA, ADD/CVD, and duty drawback
Leads a global matrixed and direct reporting trade compliance organization distributed across Europe, North America, and India
Provide guidance on audit, assessment and compliance monitoring activities by developing relevant plans and protocols
Support continuous improvement efforts to enhance compliance with internal policies and regulations by monitoring key performance indicators and benchmarking outcomes
Monitoring and advising on relevant global and country specific enforcement trends and upcoming regulatory changes
Managing contracts and legal relationships with brokers and other trade related vendors
Manage the voluntary disclosure process as well as continuous improvement efforts by providing substantive input and generating data to support initiatives
Lead cross functional projects with supply chain, engineering, global business units and finance on significant initiatives, counseling on strategic business priorities and decision making
Identify and assess legal risks and opportunities related to trade compliance and advise accordingly
Partner with and rationalize the use of outside counsel to manage complex regulatory issues and interface with regulatory agencies
Skills & Knowledge:
8+ years of experience with professional services firm, law firm and/or in-house counsel or combination thereof
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school
Strong knowledge in international business law, including without limitation, the Customs and Border Protection rules and regulations, Export Administration Regulations, ITAR, OFAC sanctions, CFIUS, HTS classification, working knowledge of World Trade Organization and anticorruption laws
Ability to influence and leverage through a matrixed organization
Managerial and leadership courage; should demonstrate superior people leadership skills with a global team
Excellent communication both verbally and written are a must; ability to communicate in various mediums (phone, video, etc.) to empower global teams with adequate information to deliver high quality work product
Demonstrated ability to be flexible and shift internal procedures and controls as regulatory environment changes
Experience engaging with US and/or foreign import/export regulators that govern manufacturing organizations
Experience with software and data analytics to improve trade controls and operations
High emotional intelligence that shows emotional strength and maturity
Strong organizational skills, ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet short deadlines
Strong advocacy, negotiation, interpersonal and legal research skills
